For Teen Drivers

  • Add your teen to your auto insurance policy
  • Ask about good student or driver training discounts
  • Set clear rules about texting, passengers, and curfews
  • Store insurance ID cards in glove box or digital wallet
  • Review what to do in case of an accident (printable glovebox card)
  • Consider increasing liability limits or adding an umbrella policy
  • Talk about roadside assistance options

For College Students (Living on Campus or in an Apartment)

  • Update homeowners or renters insurance—does it cover dorm/apartment contents?
  • Consider a separate renters policy if they live off-campus
  • Create a basic home inventory (phone photos + list in cloud storage)
  • Review coverage for laptops, bikes, or electronics
  • Make sure they have health insurance, either through your plan or their own
  • Know where their nearest in-network health providers are located
  • Pack a mini “just in case” folder with copies of health insurance cards, ID, and emergency contacts

Life & Legal Must-Haves

  • Discuss the importance of budgeting and credit
  • Set up an auto-draft for regular savings (even if small!)
  • Encourage them to sign a HIPAA release or power of attorney so you can help in an emergency
  • Consider a small life insurance policy (especially for student loan cosigners)

Extra Tips

  • Add safety apps like Life360 or location sharing (with their permission!)
  • Talk through real-life “what if” scenarios: fender benders, lost ID, illness, etc.
  • Walk them through how to file a claim or contact insurance reps
